Fishing season has had a late start for me this year. There are a lot of things in competition for time on my schedule. First off, my job has been very demanding on my time. Secondly my wife and I took a long vacation at the end of March. Travel is my other passion and we have a sister site (OrdinaryVacationer.com) that we are in the process of detailing our adventures. Lastly the weather in Northern KY has been extremely wet this year. I heard the weatherman say that it was the 10th wettest April ever recorded. I generally fish the Ohio River and it was flooded for a good part of April, and took some time to go down.
All of those excuses aside, I was finally able to hit the water the last weekend of April.
There were a few surprises on the river after the flood. I put in at the Boone’s Landing Ramp in western Boone County KY which is on a confluence of a few creeks that lead into the Ohio River. The flood left behind a sandbar at the end of the docks that another fisherman told me about prior to launching the boat. It was still passable if you lifted the trim up on the boat.
The feeder creeks were all very muddy as the area has continued to experience a seemingly never ending onslaught of rain. After a quick discussion with the other fisherman I met at the ramp, we all decided to hit the main river. While it was still muddy, it was much better than the feeder creeks. The trip started by heading upriver to a long stretch of rocky bank to see what was out there. I stuck with mostly a small silver crank with a modified tail hook. Upsizing the rear treble hook as I was loosing a lot of fish toward the end of last year.
It worked I caught a MONSTER!…..

The wind picked up quickly that morning and fishing dried up immediately. It was in the low 40s that morning as well so I put the boat back on the trailer fairly quick. When I was pulling the boat out an employee of the parks department came over and told me they are dredging out the new sandbar soon.
Hoping to hit the River again soon but the rain has been a real pain this year. It is supposed to continue through this weekend and into early next week.
This first trip at least got me out on the water. More to come soon!
